Re-conceptualising the classic A-line silhouette…

The women’s tailored jacket and dress is a significant garment as it challenges the traditional ideas of masculinity and femininity. The garment is inspired from women in the 1950’s and Christian Dior’s New Look through the design feature of a cinched waistline, and a full skirt, reflecting the aesthetics of 1950’s women’s fashion.

  • This 1950’s/Christian Dior inspired garment including an elegant dress and jacket set has a highly sophisticated tailored fit enhancing the classic A-line silhouette with a vintage feminine style. The modification to the pattern Model 165 Burda Style 02/2011, of panels and pleats in the dress design reflects the silhouette of 1950s women fashion and Christian Dior’s New Look in a contemporary style. The panels and pleats effectively create enhances the aesthetic quality and shape to the garment without having to include aspects such as a corset and boning. The transition from the panels at the bust to the pleats from the waist creates rhythm to the garment, with the assistance of vertical lines the dress is very slimming and aesthetically pleasing. The addition of yoke onto the dress assists in the aesthetic and functional features of the design. Not only does it reflect the 1950s modesty and elegant aesthetic, however it increases the wearability of the dress as it allows for more movement without the dress slipping down whilst being worn. The outer fabric of the dress is made from a Wool/Viscose blend Crepe, which has a medium drape and slight lustre. The soft pink crème colour creates a contrast’s the deep navy jacket, reflecting the inspiration of Christian Dior’s New Look and enhancing the overall aesthetic of the design. The dress is embellished with a minimalistic piping trimming around the neckline and yoke, reflecting the elegant inspiration of 1950s, Christian Dior. 

    The modification the pattern Model 118 Burda Style 09/2017, to reflect the inspiration of 1950’s Christian Dior. The existing peplum was removed and self-drafted triangular panels on the front and back of the jacket, aids in the visual aesthetic of a 1950s silhouette and Christian Dior’s New Look. The panels create rhythm causing an allusion of a nip waist to the design of the classic vintage 1950’s Christian Dior A-line Silhouette. The angular panels also assist in creating a sophisticated tailored look to the garment that is unique and luxurious. An inverted pleat was added to the back of the design to match the pleating design of the dress. The addition of shoulder pads enhanced the strong shape and silhouette of the jacket. The addition of a piping trim for match the trim of the dress was added to the cuffs to create unity throughout the garment and combine the contrasting fabrics. The both the jacket and dress is lined with a lustrous rose polyester satin to match each other make the garment elegant and cohesive. Triangular bound buttonhole was added to the design to creates a tailored look. This type of buttonhole achieves both aesthetic and functional needs without being distracting to the rest of the design. The chosen fabric for the jacket is a deep navy-blue crepe, made from viscose, acetate and elastane, which has a medium drape and can hold structure, which is required to create this jacket as it will have a comfortable stretch and be form fitted, as well as providing appropriate insulation required for a jacket. The jacket is embellished with beautiful bows, with the incorporation of one bow button and a bow embellishment above the inverted pleat to add femininity against the masculine harsh angled lines, which reflect the inspiration of women in the 1950s.
